The world's first successful simultaneous transplantation of the lungs and liver to a nine-year-old child with cystic fibrosis (CF is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine) was performed at the Moscow National Medical Research Center of Transplantology and Artificial Organs named by academician V.I. Shumakov, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
This is a unique operation, which has no analogues in world practice at the moment. Three cases of similar organ transplants for patients aged 25 to 30 years are described. Unfortunately, they all ended tragically. During the operation, carried out by the specialists of the Shumakov Center was transplanted to three organs at once: the liver and both lungs.
According to the press service of the Shumakov Center, a nine-year-old boy Mikhail from the village of Taranai on Sakhalin Island was diagnosed with a hereditary disease named cystic fibrosis. It simultaneously affects several organ systems the first among which are the lungs. In addition the child was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. One of the difficulties was to find donor organs that fit in size, since the boy at 9 years old weighed only about 30 kg. When the organs were found, the team headed by the director of the Shumakov Center academician Sergey Gotye, managed to cope with the most difficult task of their transplantation. The operation took place in February 2019, it lasted more than 16 hours. At the moment Michael feels good. Befor the procedure the boy had difficulty moving around the room. But now he walks on his own and is ready for discharge.
